Studying in Italy

The road to a university in Italy, step by step

Italian state universities teach medicine, engineering, economics and sciences in English. Entry to every programme starts with an exam, followed by the ranking, pre-enrolment, visa and enrolment. Here is the road step by step:

  • Exam stage: the part we prepare you for
  • Enrolment stage: official application and documents
Step 1 · Exam stage

Choose the programme and the exam

Which exam you take depends on the programme and the university you want.

  • Medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine (state universities): IMAT
  • Engineering, economics, pharmacy, sciences: CEnT-S
  • Politecnico di Torino: TIL-I for engineering, TIL-A for architecture and design
  • Bocconi University: the Bocconi online test; some universities, Bocconi included, also accept SAT scores
Step 3 · Exam stage

Get into the ranking

Admission is decided by the ranking (graduatoria) built from exam scores.

  • In IMAT, non-EU applicants, including those from Türkiye, compete in separate quotas and separate rankings.
  • IMAT is scored out of 90. Ties are broken by the biology, chemistry, physics-maths, logic and reading scores, in that order.
  • A CEnT-S score is valid at every participating university.
  • TIL-I needs at least 30/100 to enter the ranking; around 60 is usually enough for admission.
Step 5 · Enrolment stage

Diploma recognition and visa

The documents you need for your high school diploma to be recognised in Italy and for a student visa.

  • For the diploma, a Dichiarazione di valore or a CIMEA statement; the university tells you which one it needs.
  • Student visa: a type D long-stay national visa.
  • The visa usually requires proof of funds and health insurance.
  • After arriving in Italy you apply for a residence permit (permesso di soggiorno).
Step 2 · Exam stage

Learn the exam calendar

How often and how each exam is held differs a lot. Your plan is built around it.

  • IMAT: once a year, in September, on paper. One attempt per academic year.
  • CEnT-S: four windows a year. Taken at home (@HOME) or at a university (@UNI).
  • TIL-I: five sessions between February and July. Up to three attempts, the best score counts.
  • TIL-A: in July, in person.
  • Bocconi: online. Up to four attempts a year between July and April.
Step 4 · Enrolment stage

Pre-enrol on Universitaly

Non-EU applicants also pre-enrol on Universitaly, Italy's official portal, separately from the exam.

  • You choose the programme and fill in the pre-enrolment application on Universitaly.
  • The university reviews and approves your application.
  • The approved application is sent to the Italian consulate for your visa.
Step 6 · Enrolment stage

Fees and scholarships

At state universities the yearly fee is mostly based on family income.

  • Income is declared with an ISEE; for families living abroad the equivalent is the ISEE parificato.
  • Regional scholarships (DSU) can give a fee waiver, a yearly grant and housing. Application rules differ by region.
  • Bocconi is a private university with its own fee and scholarship system.

Dates, quotas and required documents can change every year; check the official announcements of the university and Universitaly before you apply. NextGate Lab prepares you for the exam part of this road.

Exams

Exams we prepare you for

The exams Italian universities ask for when you apply. Pick the exam you are taking and your study plan is built around its date and topics.

IMAT

Open now

The entrance exam for English-taught medicine, dentistry and veterinary programmes at Italian state universities. Run by the ministry (MUR), on paper.

Applying
  • Non-EU: each university has its own quota and its own ranking; a score above 0 is enough to be ranked. Universitaly pre-enrolment is also needed for the visa.
  • EU: one national ranking; you list universities in order of preference and need at least 20 points to be ranked.
Mock exam
  • Scoring: as in the real exam: +1.5 correct, −0.4 wrong, 0 blank.
  • Afterwards: your score, a result for each of the five sections, time per question and a step-by-step solution to every question.

Bocconi

Open now

The online entrance exam for bachelor programmes at Bocconi University in Milan.

Applying
  • Non-EU: the same application and test for everyone; after admission you need Universitaly pre-enrolment and a student visa.
  • EU: no visa needed; Bocconi groups applicants by whether they come from the Italian school system, not by citizenship.
Mock exam
  • Scoring: as in the real exam: +1 correct, −0.2 wrong, 0 blank.
  • Afterwards: your score; separate results for maths, reading, numerical reasoning and critical thinking, and step-by-step solutions.

CEnT-S

Coming soon

CISIA's exam for English-taught engineering, economics, pharmacy and science programmes. It replaced TOLC-I, TOLC-E and TOLC-F.

Applying
  • Non-EU: you compete for the places the university reserves for non-EU applicants; because of the visa timeline, applicants sit the test in the first periods, then complete Universitaly pre-enrolment.
  • EU: the same test for everyone; each university's call sets how the score is used.
Mock exam
  • Scoring: as in the real exam: +1 correct, −0.25 wrong, 0 blank.
  • Status: In preparation.

TIL-I

Coming soon

The entrance exam for engineering programmes at Politecnico di Torino. Up to three attempts, the best score counts.

Applying
  • Non-EU: separate quota and separate ranking; sessions open to non-EU applicants end in late May.
  • EU: sessions run until July, and the last one is open only to EU applicants.
Mock exam
  • Scoring: +1 correct, −0.25 wrong, 0 blank; scaled to 100.
  • Status: In preparation.

TIL-A

Coming soon

The entrance exam for architecture and design programmes at Politecnico di Torino. Five sections of 10 questions.

Applying
  • Non-EU: separate quota (85 places in 2026) and a separate ranking.
  • EU: separate quota (415 places in 2026) and a separate ranking; both groups sit the test in July.
Mock exam
  • Scoring: +1 correct, −0.25 wrong, 0 blank.
  • Status: In preparation.

SAT

Coming soon

College Board's digital exam. Some Italian universities, Bocconi included, accept SAT scores for bachelor applications.

Applying
  • Non-EU: the same score requirements as EU applicants; only the application deadlines close earlier.
  • EU: Bocconi, for example, asks for at least 1040 overall and 520 per section; Politecnico di Torino and Politecnico di Milano also accept it for some programmes.
Mock exam
  • Scoring: no penalty for wrong answers; 200–800 per section.
  • Status: In preparation.

Study plan

A study plan built on your gaps and your exam date

We first identify the topics where you lose points, then prepare a plan for every day until the exam. Your part is to follow the daily plan.

First, we identify your gaps

The questions you solve and the mocks you take reveal where you lose points. Your mistakes are classified by cause, and the topic that affects your score most is always at the top of the list.

Chemical bonds 38%
Forces and motion 46%
Cell membrane 55%
Genetics 71%

Your plan is built around your exam date

You enter your exam date, weekly study time and target score. Your gaps are spread evenly over the remaining time, with priority given to your weakest topics. Mock and review days are set in advance in your weekly agenda; full mocks are scheduled at the real exam time, so you get used to the rhythm of exam day.

Mock exams

Mock exams under real exam conditions

Mocks follow the real exam's number of questions, time limit and scoring. Topics that come out weak in a mock feed into your plan, and the following days are updated accordingly.
